Joyce Tan, the visionary founder behind JTMUSES, embarked on a journey to empower differently-abled artists and celebrate Singapore’s rich heritage through The Muse Project. Collaborating with the I’mable Collective and SG Enable, Joyce believes fervently in the transformative power of art and is dedicated to mentoring and refining the artistic skills of individuals with diverse abilities.
In its early stages, The Muse Project encountered its share of challenges, as Joyce reflects on the initial hurdles with candour. Amidst mentoring three youths around their late twenties on the autism spectrum, she navigated unique complexities, with Douglas emerging as the primary focus due to his higher functionality. Joyce’s friends, mentoring youths with more profound challenges, faced issues ranging from behavioural to coordination difficulties. With patience and keen observation, Joyce learned to tailor her approach, recognizing the need for close supervision and understanding the nuanced communication styles of her mentees.
Yet, amidst these challenges, Joyce found immense fulfilment in witnessing the artistic endeavours of her proteges blossom into tangible creations. From lacquer trays to travel mugs and drawstring backpacks, their artworks found resonance as unique gifts, captivating audiences at the “I’m able” collective bazaar since 2019. However, behind the scenes, Joyce grappled with the logistical intricacies of sourcing reliable suppliers and meeting minimum order quantities. Navigating these hurdles demanded meticulous planning, adept negotiation skills, and occasional compromises, underscoring the commitment required to ensure the success of art-related merchandise ventures.
Through perseverance and unwavering dedication, Joyce Tan’s JTMUSES continues to carve a path of inclusivity and creativity, fostering a vibrant community where artistic expression knows no bounds.
