Art Story: This is how Singaporeans have breakfast in local kopitiams! Growing up in Singapore, one of our all-time favourite breakfast foods is half-boiled eggs with kaya toast with kopi or teh. If there’s a proper skill most locals have, it’s ordering coffee (kopi), from the local kopitiam.

Why is it called kopitiam? A kopitiam or kopi tiam is a traditional breakfast and coffee shop found in Southeast Asia. The word is a portmanteau of the Malay word for coffee (as borrowed and altered from the Portuguese) and the Hokkien dialect word for shop (店; POJ: tiàm)

Cultural significance in Singapore

History Of Kopitiam Coffee – It begins in the late 18th century, when Singapore initiated a flood of immigrants from across Europe and Asia in order to help speed up the country’s development. When these cultures began to co-mingle, the European love of coffee met Malaysian taste buds and kopi was born.
