The charming residential shophouses of Joo Chiat, adorned with Plumeria blooms, serve as a legacy of Singapore’s Peranakan culture. I am one such ornamental shophouse, built between 1889 and 1920. My story comes to life in the artwork "JOY–乐," created by JTMUSES.
In this vibrant scene, a Nyonya woman in a kebaya lights a small string of firecrackers, evoking memories of a time when our neighborhood was filled with cultural celebrations. Cats and dogs lounge lazily amidst colorful birds, adding to the playful atmosphere.
Additionally, an Austin 1949 London taxi, illustrated by the differently-abled artist Douglas (Tung Seng), brings a touch of nostalgia, reminding us of the bustling days when these taxis filled the streets, transporting passengers to their destinations.
Together, our stories weave a rich tapestry of blessings and cultural significance, reminding all who pass by of the vibrant heritage that continues to thrive in the heart of Joo Chiat.
